Adventures In Juicing… Tumeric.

Okay, I’m not quite sure how this is going to turn out.

You  guys know that I’ve become something of an avid juicer, and I’ll toss just about anything into my Kuvings to see what comes out of the other side. Recently, I learned about juicing ‘tumeric.’ A colleague mentioned it to me in passing, and recently forwarded me all of the insanely amazing benefits of juicing this root, that looks more like the sweet potato version of the ginger family.

From WebMD:

Turmeric is used for arthritis, heartburn (dyspepsia), stomach pain, diarrhea, intestinal gas, stomachbloating, loss of appetite, jaundice, liver problems and gallbladder disorders.

It is also used for headaches, bronchitis, colds, lung infections, fibromyalgia, leprosy, fever, menstrual problems, and cancer. Other uses include depression, Alzheimer’s disease, water retention, worms, and kidney problems.

Some people apply turmeric to the skin for pain, ringworm, bruising, leech bites, eye infections, inflammatory skin conditions, soreness inside of the mouth, and infected wounds.

M’kay.

I don’t have ANY of these issues. So should I still use tumeric?

Colleague says YES, because tumeric is also a preventative. Much like ginger (which I juice on a regular basis). So I’m going to traipse over to my local Whole Foods and see what I can see. I hear that it’s got an ‘earthy’ taste with a bitter undertone. Can’t be any worse than ginger, or Goldenseal for that matter… which I’ve been taking since I was a wee one.

I’ll juice up a couple of roots and report back. Bottoms up!

  1. I just started adding turmeric to my smoothies. After all these years of using the powder had no idea what it actually looked like! Anyway found it in local Asian shops. To my taste buds it’s not as zingy as ginger but it’s not offensive either.

  2. Well if it’s not as strong as ginger, I’m sure I can handle it! 😀 I’m gonna juice it straight and see what happens, then start adding it. I found a great mango drink with tumeric. If it turns out good, I’ll share the recipe! 🙂
